πŸ•’ Telling Time: O’Clock and Quarter Past

⏰ What Is Time?

Time tells us when things happen — like when we wake up, go to school, eat lunch, or play with friends.
We use a clock to tell the time.

A clock has two hands:

  • πŸ–️ The short hand is the hour hand. It shows the hour.

  • The long hand is the minute hand. It shows the minutes.

πŸ•› O’Clock

When the minute hand points to 12, we say it is O’Clock.
The hour hand shows which hour it is.

πŸ“Examples:

  • When the short hand points to 3 and the long hand points to 12, it is 3 o’clock.

  • When the short hand points to 7 and the long hand points to 12, it is 7 o’clock.

πŸ—£️ We say: “It’s three o’clock.” or “It’s seven o’clock.”

πŸ‘‰ Remember:
O’Clock means a full hour, when the long hand is straight up at 12.

πŸ• Quarter Past

When the minute hand points to 3, it means a quarter past the hour.

πŸ•’ One hour is divided into four quarters:

  • 15 minutes + 15 minutes + 15 minutes + 15 minutes = 60 minutes

So when the minute hand has moved 15 minutes from 12, we say “quarter past.”

πŸ“Examples:

  • When the short hand is just past 2 and the long hand points to 3, it is quarter past 2.

  • When the short hand is just past 5 and the long hand points to 3, it is quarter past 5.

πŸ—£️ We say: “It’s quarter past two.” or “It’s quarter past five.”

🌟 Quick Practice

Draw clocks and show the following time.
  1. 4 o’clock

  2. Quarter past 4

  3. 9 o’clock

  4. Quarter past 9

πŸ’‘ Fun Tip

If you imagine the clock as a pizza πŸ•,
then O’Clock is when the pizza is whole.
Quarter past means you’ve eaten one quarter (1 out of 4 slices)!
