π‘ What is a Settlement?
A settlement is a place where people live. It can be a village, town, city, cattlepost, or lands. Some settlements are big, others are small.
Settlements have homes, schools, churches, roads, and shops. A lot of people in Botswana live in villages.
π¨πΎπ€π©π½ People in My Settlement
In every settlement, there are different people. They may speak different languages, eat different foods, and follow different beliefs. But they all live together and help one another.
In Botswana, many people belong to different ethnic groups like Bakwena, Bangwato, Batawana, and others. They may also belong to different religions like Christianity, Islam, African Traditional Religion, and Hinduism.
π A Bit of History
Every settlement has a story. Ask your parents or older people the following questions about your settlement:
-
When people first arrived.
-
Why they chose to stay there.
-
Who the first leaders were.
π Why People Settle in Some Places
People choose where to live for many reasons. A good place to live may have:
π± Water for drinking and cooking
πΎ Good soil for farming
π§️ Rainfall for growing crops
π Grass for animals to eat
π₯ Trees for firewood
π Wild fruits to eat
π A railway to move goods and people
πΊ️ Let’s Draw!
You can draw a sketch map of your settlement. Include:
-
Main buildings (like schools or clinics) π«
-
Natural features (like rivers or hills) ⛰️
-
Roads and paths π£️
Label them clearly.
π¬ Let’s Think!
-
What is the name of your settlement?
-
Which languages are spoken there?
-
Why do you think people chose to settle there?
