π§ What Is a Leader?
A leader is someone who makes rules and solves problems. Leaders have authority, which means they have the power to guide, protect, help, and solve problems for the people they lead.
We find leaders:

At home

In schools
-
In churches and mosques
-
In clinics and hospitals
-
In the community or country
π§π½⚖️ Examples of People with Authority
Here are some people who are leaders in your community:

Chief (Kgosi) – settles conflicts between people at the Kgotla and leads the village
-
Kgosana – solves problems in a ward (a small part of a village) and helps the Kgosi at the Kgotla
-
Councillor – speaks on behalf of the people in an area (not just a village) and helps bring things like roads, water, and schools
-
Member of Parliament (MP) – helps make laws and decisions for the country
-
Police Officer – arrests lawbreakers and keeps people safe
-
Traffic Officer – controls traffic and keeps roads safe
-
Teacher – helps children learn and behave well
-
Doctor or Nurse – treats the sick and teaches people how to stay healthy

Parent or Guardian – makes rules at home and helps children grow well

Pastor or Priest – teaches people in church how to love and care for one another

Imam – a Muslim leader who teaches the community how to live peacefully, follow God’s guidance, and care for others

Let’s look at what some of these leaders do:

Councillor | Speaks for people in an area, helps bring services like roads and water |
MP | Makes national laws and decisions |
Police Officer | Makes sure people follow the law, arrests wrongdoers |
Teacher | Teaches children, helps with behaviour and schoolwork |
Parent/Guardian | Makes rules at home, teaches children how to live well |
Pastor/Priest | Teaches God’s word and how to treat others kindly |
Imam | Leads Islamic prayers and teaches peace, respect, and good behaviour |
Doctor/Nurse | Treats the sick and gives health advice |

Some leaders have more power than others. This is called a leadership structure. The person at the top has the most responsibility and gives direction to others below.
